The São Bento Monastery is a religious complex composed of the Abacial Basilica Nossa Senhora da Assunção, the Colégio de São Bento and also the Faculdade de São Bento.
Mass with Gregorian chant is the highlight of this place. The main session takes place on Sundays at 10 am. The mass is accompanied by the choir and the sound of the impressive 7,000-pipe organ, brought from Germany in 1954.
Those who visit the place have the option of trying the breads, cakes and cookies produced with great quality by the monks themselves in the monastery’s bakery. And on Sundays, brunch is another dining option on site.
The current structure of the São Bento Monastery began to be built between 1910 and 1912, based on a project created by the German architect Richard Berndl (1875-1955). However, the history of this important site is more than 400 years old, its beginnings took place in 1598 with the arrival of Benedictine monks in Sao Paulo. Soon a small church was built and over the years, other buildings were added. Until 1910, in order to follow the city’s urbanization process, the buildings from the colonial era were replaced by this grand complex that we know today.
